I have so many thoughts about this - it's so good! Thank you for sharing this. We also parent differently, and I've struggled over the years with it. Questioning the status quo is hard but necessary.
One of our biggest challenges is being in community with others (which I believe in!). We hold to our kid's bedtime for a variety of reasons (they're 9 and 12). But their friends in the neighborhood get to play later in the summer and when the sun sets later. And then our kids feel left out because we want them home. We then make compromises, where they get to stay out later 2-3 nights a week, not all the time. It can be hard to find the balance between doing what's best for our family and living in community with others.
What a beautiful, insightful, and intelligent piece of writing! Thank you for all that you are doing to raise awareness and to help us allies be more effective.

Doing the hard thing is sometimes the right thing.
